Episode 7
12 June 2023

Here’s a chase which produced limited results but at the same time, set a personal record in my history of storm chasing. I’ll come back to that in a minute. Initially, just east of Brownwood, Texas seemed like the most logical target. I knew it was not expected to be a really big tornado day but it still seemed like there was a fair shot for something worthwhile. I remember sitting there and I was just getting hired to work on an Amazon commercial. It was certainly fun, trying to be in a meeting and trying to chase storms at the same time. Fortunately, I was parked so it’s not like anyone was hearing madness. Plus, a lot of the people I was working with were friends from our last gig together, which meant they understood my situation. It was certainly a fun conversation for those unfamiliar. As the day was progressing, I could see that Brownwood was not going to be as fun as hoped for. If memory serves me right, I believe the cap was stronger than expected. However, to the southwest was this developing supercell, making its way for Brady. Of course, I had a knee jerk reaction and went straight for it. As I was going down Highway 377, its front edge was starting to overtake the road. This had me slightly concerned because it was not a light rain. Once cleared of that, I could see the beauty that was taking shape. Though I don’t live too far from Brady, I had never been there. This meant I had no idea where I could go to get a good view of the incoming monster. Like a crazy person, I was literally going up and down so many blocks until I found the school’s football stadium. Due to my fear of losing out on capturing this beauty for what she was, I set up where I did. Unknown to me is if I had moved up just 100 feet further, I could have had the most picture perfect view. I mentioned a personal record setter earlier so here’s that information. While the structure was amazing, it was the sound of thunder that I captured. Not the small stuff but the big big one! I’ve heard thousands of crashes of thunder in my life but never before had I captured the sound with such amazing clarity and detail! Once it was time to move south, as this beast had lost its wow factor, I would watch one last tornado warned storm but it never amounted to much of anything. I mean, it was cool but this whole day just didn’t produce enough results to really show more in the episode. I personally believe if I had been in a better position, anywhere south of Brownwood, I think I would have gotten more footage to show you. However, because of the record setter that I discussed earlier, it became a no-brainer that this would become an episode. While out there, I did see Reed Timmer and the Dominator team and the guys at Live Storm Chasers, the ones who now own the TIV from the hit series Storm Chasers that was once seen on Discovery. None of them stopped but it was nice to see them, regardless.
