Episode 4
22 April 2025

Going into this chase, I was having a struggle with confidence in the overall potential. I publicly stated Sheffield, Texas but then I wanted Rankin. The hardest part about chasing in this terrain is there’s not a lot of just straight directional routes. In other words, there’s not a lot of straight north, south, east, or west roads. The majority of the roads go into some kind of angle, which may or may not be advantageous. As the day was unfolding, it was apparent that I should go towards McCamey. I thought about going to Fort Stockton because I could see that the storm was becoming better organized. Unfortunately, there was no way I could reach it, timing wise, but I still wanted to make it to I-10 but as I mentioned before, the roads are not the most conducive to success as a storm chaser. Going through McCamey, I was treated to a beautiful mammatus display but getting south was everything but easy. Once I had seen a tornado report go up near Fort Stockton, I felt like it was too late. Though, it looked like on radar that the storm was trying to split. As I was going down Ranch Road 1901, the reward of this decision was quickly showing itself. I could see this horribly organized wall cloud making some beautiful motion but I needed to find a clear view of it. That took me down FM 11 and I finally got into a good position to intercept it. The problem with this is the storm was not trying hard enough to get her act together, as though she was sitting nearly stationary. It became apparent that she was going to weaken but I decided to stay with her until she died completely. I wanted to be on US Highway 285 to reach the tornado producing supercell but there was no easy way to get to that one. Though, I know several storm chasers did stay with that one and she did not disappoint visually. As my chase day was coming to a close, I got treated with such a beautiful rainbow and that made the day most worth it!
