18 April 2024
Initially coming to Clifton, Texas, a place I saw many times the year before, this would come to be a day with very high hopes but very minimal expectations. Something inside of me was saying this was going to be a good day for at least one isolated tornado potential. After some considerable time had passed, I finally started to make a move towards Lampassas but initially decided on Arnett. I don’t remember why I made that initial decision but I think it had to do with the storms already going up and thinking that would be a good spot. It really was not the best choice due to the distance between me and the incoming storms. Hence the decision for Lampassas instead. Finally north of town, the storm coming my way started to show some signs of it rotating. This boosted my confidence in my decision. Finally, she’s tornado warned, and I am very convinced I did see a wall cloud. The biggest issue was my distance and the horrible contrast made it 99% impossible for me to confidently say I was right. Still, the overall cloud structure was looking pretty alright. On radar, she was starting to hook and I was in the best viewing point for it but that would not last long. Sadly, she couldn’t get her act together and she was in the middle of nowhere! Why did she have to be such a mean tease like that?! This was definitely a redemption from the last chase but it was not as big as I had hoped for. That’s when I reminded myself where my expectations were from the start of the day. It’s very important to always keep those expectations in check, when you chase storms.
